Behind every dish is a story — and Mizz Ruth’s begins with love, legacy, and a deep sense of purpose.
Raised in Chicago as the youngest of 11 children, Mizz Ruth never had the chance to meet her grandparents — they had all passed before she was born. But what she did inherit was a powerful connection to family, food, and faith. Her love for cooking began in her mother’s kitchen, where meals were made with care, community, and soulful southern flavor.
When her mother fell ill, Mizz Ruth moved to Detroit to care for her — a decision that changed her life and deepened her calling. It was during this time that she began to understand the healing power of food, both emotionally and physically. Cooking became not only an act of service, but a way to preserve her family’s heritage and bring comfort to others.
Inspired by her brother Daniel, a minister and community cook who spent years feeding and serving others, Mizz Ruth carries forward his spirit of generosity and love. Through her pop-up, she now honors his legacy — and her mother’s — by nourishing Detroit with the same care and intention that shaped her own life.
As a caregiver, a mother, and a woman of deep faith, Mizz Ruth believes that food is more than fuel — it’s a ministry. Mizz Ruth’s Grill is her way of serving the city she now calls home, one healthy, soulful plate at a time.
